All of the above-linked actions have been claimed by the underground ELF through anonymous communiques to media, support groups/spokespersons, authorities or targets. There are many more actions suspected to have been the work of the Earth Liberation Front, which are not listed here because they were never officially claimed. Throughout the early history of the ELF (1992-1997) sending communiques to claim responsibility for particular actions was not common practice, as actions were more low key sabotage. Sometime around the end of 1997 though, the ELF took to more dramatic and public actions - more similar to those of the Animal Liberation Front (ALF). Where did the ELF come from? As the story goes, the ELF was formed in Brighton, England in 1992 by Earth First! members realizing that their tactics must intensify if they were going to make an effort to truly save the environment. The following year they are said to have declared solidarity with the Animal Liberation Front . While there is no real documentation of this or any early history of the ELF, in February of 1994 Judi Bari wrote in the Earth First journal that she felt that Earth First! "should mainstream itself and leave the more radical tactics to the Earth Liberation Front".
