Press Release: ELF STRIKES TWICE IN MARCH: OPPOSES THE WAR AND ATTACKS URBAN SPRAWL For Immediate Release
Through media reports, the ELF Press Office has been made aware of two ELF actions in the month of March. Although the ELF Press Office has received no communications about these actions, spraypainted signatures at both action scenes indicates claims of responsibility by ELF activists.
March 28th - Montgomery, Alabama Vehicles at Navy Recruiting Headquarters in Montgomery were attacked overnight. Damages included messages spraypainted on three Navy sedans and two Navy vans. In addition, a large two-panel truck was set on fire. Damage estimates are not known at this time.
Messages spraypainted included the slogans "Stop the War," "Leave Iraq" and "Stop Killing," clearly indicating the reason this ELF cell targeted the military facility. It was also reported that all cars and vans targeted carried the ELF signature in spraypaint.
This is the first specifically anti-war action carried out by the ELF in North America, though there has been at least one direct action attack on a military recruiting center since the start of the war in Iraq (Edison, NJ - March 18th - claimed by the Direct Action Front).
March 21st - Superior Township, Michigan A pair of houses under construction were burned in an upscale suburban development in Superior Township, Michigan. An apparent anti-sprawl action, grafitti left at the scene claimed the work as that of the ELF.
The two houses were both in late stages of construction. In particular, one of the homes was only two weeks until completion. Damage totals are estimated at approximately $400,000 US. These were the third and fourth fires in this subdividision since September, though the earlier two were not claimed by any group.
Grafitti left on the back of a garage of a nearby home under construction said "ELF - NO SPRAWL". This is the second anti-sprawl action claimed by the ELF since the start of 2003.
Any communication by the ELF to the ELF Press Office will be reported as it is received.
The Earth Liberation Front is an international underground organization that uses direct action in the form of economic sabotage to stop the destruction of the natural environment. Since 1997, the ELF in North America has caused over $45 million in damages to entities who profit from the destruction of life and the planet.
